| Ocean Front Condominium Complex
Location:
Kill Devil Hills, NC
Facility:
15 unit, two-bedroom, condominium complex on the oceanfront.
Site Problem:
Hurricane Isabel destroyed the pool on the oceanside and the Coastal Area Management Authority (CAMA) would not allow it to be re-built. The pool was relocated to the west side of the property where the current conventional septic was located. Soils are sandy and well drained.
Resolution:
Ralph Calfee, P.E. approached AQWA about the project in the spring of 2004. An AdvanTex® system was designed to increase the long term acceptance rate by 100%. The final low presurefield consists of 600 linear feet of pipe 5’ on center. The side yard setback was also reduced from 25’ to 10’. Tonie Robertson of Robertson Repair installed the system.
Equipment:
- Two 3,000 gallon septic tanks
- One 3,000 gallon denitrification tank
- Double AdvanTex® AX100 System
- One 3,000 gallon re-circulation tank
- UV unit (Dual Bulb)
- 3,000 gallon pump tank
- 600 linear feet of low pressure pipe drainfield
- TeleComm® telemetry control panel controls both re-circ and discharge pumps. It is connected to a dedicated phone line.
Results:
The system typically receives design flow during the summer and although not designed for it, the system is producing reclaimed quality water. With the TeleComm® telemetry control panel we were able to isolate some leaking toilets in the late summer of 2004. We found the problem well before the system or drainfield had failed.
